The Twitter page of The Eminence in Shadow has raised the curtain on the upcoming isekai fantasy anime’s main cast, revealing Seiichirou Yamashita as protagonist Cid Kagenou, Kana Hanazawa as Alexia Midgar, and Youko Hikasa as Iris Midgar. Additionally, the KADOKAWA Anime Channel Facebook page has released character visuals for the trio, with two visuals for Cid to depict his different forms.

The anime is set to premiere in 2022.

The Eminence in Shadow is based on the light novels by Daisuke Aizawa with illustrations from Azunishi, which began in 2018 and have four volumes as of February 2021. The story began as a web novel on Shouetsuka ni Narou and has inspired two manga series, including a comedic spin-off. The light novels are published under the ENTERBRAIN label.

Yen Press describes the light novels’ first volume as:

Even in his past life, Cid’s dream wasn’t to become a protagonist or a final boss. He’d rather lie low as a minor character until it’s prime time to reveal he’s a mastermind…or at least, do the next best thing-pretend to be one! And now that he’s been reborn into another world, he’s ready to set the perfect conditions to live out his dreams to the fullest. Armed with his overactive imagination, Cid jokingly recruits members to his organization and makes up a whole backstory about an evil cult that they need to take down. Well, as luck would have it, these imaginary adversaries turn out to be the real deal-and everyone knows the truth but him!

The main staff includes Kazuya Nakanishi (Comic Girls assistant director, Vivid Strike! main animator) as director, Kanichi Katou (Those Snow White Notes) as series composer, and Makoto Iino (Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town) as character designer. Nexus is the animation production company.
