Hakuoki OVA Gets Teaser Trailer, Visual

A teaser trailer and key visual for the upcoming Hakuoki OVA have been released. The OVA is set to be released in three parts.

The first part, titled Tsubananagashi, Kumogakure no Koku, will be released on December 24. The second part, titled Yoiyami, Yuugao Bettou no Tou, will release on January 28, 2022. Finally, the third part, titled Hoshi Mukae, Unkan no Shirabe, will release on February 25.

The upcoming OVA is the latest anime adaptation of the visual novel series, with previous anime including a three-season series, movies, and an OVA. The first Hakuoki anime was 2010’s Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom, while the latest prior to the new OVA was 2016’s chibi-style Hakuouki: Otogisoushi

The original Hakuoki visual novel was released as a Japan-only PS2 title in 2008. It was followed by numerous versions that were released on various platforms, as well as a prequel and a Musou-style spin-off. A two-part remaster in the form of Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds and Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms were released in 2015 and 2016 respectively in Japan, with international releases in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

Crunchyroll describes Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom as:

Disguised as a man, Chizuru Yukimura has come to Kyoto searching for her missing father, a doctor who developed a magical elixir that increases the drinker’s speed, strength and healing abilities. Instead of her father, however, she stumbles across a battle between the Shinsengumi and the Furies, evil vampire-like creatures of their own making.

Osamu YamazakiAtsuko Nakajima, and Kow Ōtani, who respectively served as director, character designer, and music composer for all of the previous Hakuoki anime apart from Otohisoushi, are returning for the new OVA. As was the case with those titles, Studio DEEN is the animation production company for the new OVA.

Shōta Aoi is playing the new character Hyōgo Sakai. Meanwhile, the returning cast includes Hōko Kuwashima as Chizuru Yukimura, Shin-ichirō Miki as Toshizō Hijikata, Shōtaro Morikubo as Sōji Okita, Kōsuke Toriumi as Hajime Saitō, Hiroyuki Yoshino as Heisuke Tōdō, Kōji Yuki as Sanosuke Harada, and Kenjirō Tsuda as Chikage Kazama.
