The Heike Story OP and ED Artists Announced

The opening and ending theme song artists for the upcoming The Heike Story anime have been announced. Hitsujibungaku is performing the opening song, “Hikarutoki,” while agraph feat.ANI (Scha Dara Parr) is performing the ending song, “unified perspective.”

The Heike Story is set to premiere on Funimation on September 15. Fuji TV’s streaming service FOD in Japan and bilibili in China will also stream the series ahead of the Japanese broadcast, which is in January 2022.

The anime is inspired by THE TALE OF THE HEIKE as translated by Hideo Furukawa. As The Japan Foundation Toronto explains:

Heike Monogatari, or The Tale of the Heike, is an epic of medieval Japanese literature, serving as a fictional dramatization of the battles of the Taira and Minamoto clans for control of Japan during the Genpei War (1180 – 1185). The Tale of the Heike has been an inspiration for centuries, providing the basis for Noh plays, woodblock prints, and many translations and interpretations.

Author Hideo Furukawa translated Heike Monogatari from its original medieval Japanese into modern Japanese, as it is used today, in his 2016 publication. The rich content of Heike Monogatari explores many themes, including the origins of bushido (the way of the warrior) and the notion of Japan as a unified nation.

The staff includes Naoko Yamada (Liz and the Blue Bird, A Silent Voice) as the director, Reiko Yoshida (Liz and the Blue Bird, A Silent Voice) as the scriptwriter, Fumiko Takano (Zettai Anzen Kamisori manga) as the original character designer, and Kojima Takashi (Ride Your Wave) as the character designer.

Other staff include Kubo Tomotaka (Promare) as the art director, Masaru Hashimoto (Sonny Boy) as the color designer, Kazuto Izumida (Shōjo Kageki Revue Starlight movie) as the photography director, and Kensuke Ushio (A Silent Voice, Liz and the Blue Bird) as music composer. Science SARU is the animation production company.

Meanwhile, the cast includes Aoi Yūki, Takahiro Sakurai, Saori Hayami, Tesshō Genda, Shigeru Chiba, Kikuko Inoue, Miyu Irino, Yumiko Kobayashi, Nobuhiko Okamoto, Natsuki Hanae, Ayumu Murase, Yū Miyazaki, Inori Minase, Tomokazu Sugita, and Yuki Kaji.
