The official website and Twitter account for the upcoming TV anime adaptation of Shinobu Ohtaka’s Orient manga revealed a new promotional video, additional cast, and the January 2022 premiere date.

The anime’s new cast includes Rie Takahashi as Tsugumi Hattori and Satoshi Hino as Naotora Takeda. Previously announced cast members include Yuma Uchida as Musashi and Sōma Saitō as Kōjiro.

The anime’s staff includes Tetsuya Yanagisawa (Senran Kagura: Shinovi Master Tokyo Youma-hen, High School DxD) as series director, Mariko Kunisawa (Ascendance of a Bookworm) as scriptwriter, Takahiro Kishida (Kageki Shoujo!!) as character designer, and Hideyuki Fukasawa (FATE/GRAND ORDER THE MOVIE Divine Realm of the Round Table: Camelot Wandering; Agateram.) as music composer. A.C.G.T. is the animation production company.

The Orient manga began serialization in 2018 in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine. It then serialized in Kodansha’s monthly Bessatsu Shounen Magazine in February.

Kodansha Comics publishes the manga in English and describes the story as:

At age 10, best friends Musashi and Kojiro sat in excited silence as Kojiro’s father spun tales of evil demons who preyed on the innocent, and the warriors who defeated them. Practicing swordplay, the two swear an oath to become the strongest in the world. But as they grow up, Kojiro turns cynical, and Musashi comes to realize that he can’t turn back 150 years of demon rule on his own. He’s being called a prodigy with a pickaxe, and he’s almost ready to settle for a life of labor. Yet he can’t shake the feeling that he still has a responsibility to act…and, soon, the injustices of his world will force his hand…
