Original Anime Backflip!! Receives Film Adaptation

Original anime Backflip!! has released a new PV and an official website teasing its upcoming film adaptation. More details will be announced at a later date.

Backflip!! is an original anime series about protagonist Shōtarō Futaba, who becomes fascinated with rhythmic gymnastics after watching an event by chance during middle school. He decides to join the team when he enters high school, meeting star-gymnast Ryōya Misato and the very seniors who inspired him in joining, and works towards his goal of becoming a high school rhythmic gymnast together with his friends.

The anime, which is set in Miyagi prefecture, originally aired in April 2021. Backflip!! was streamed by Ani-One in Southeast Asia, while it was brought to North America via Crunchyroll. It is one of three anime projects part of the larger “Zutto Ōen Project 2011 + 10…” initiative aimed at promoting Miyagi, Iwate, and Fukushima, in remembrance of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami 10 years ago. The other two anime projects are Misaki no Mayoiga, which is slated to premiere on August 27 this year, and Hula Fulla Dance, which announced a December 3 premiere date.

The Backflip!! anime was directed by Toshimasa Kuroyanagi (Omoi, Omoware, Furi, Furare) at ZEXCS, with Toshizo Nemoto (Log Horizon season 2) acting as series composer and scriptwriter, and My Little Monster manga creator Robico as original character designer. Yūki Shibata (Kimi ni Todoke 2nd Season, After the Rain) was the character designer and chief animation director for the anime, with Fumiaki Kouta as the animation director for the rhythmic gymnastics and Yuki Hayashi (Haikyū!!, My Hero Academia) as music composer. The band Centimillimental performed the opening theme song “Seishun no Enbu” (“The Dance of Youth”), while wacci performed the ending theme song titled “Anata ga Iru” (“You Are Here”).

A manga adaptation by Kei Sakuraba was launched in Kodansha’s Dessert magazine on January 22, 2021.
