Shingo Natsume-helmed Sonny Boy Premieres July 15, Reveals Main Cast

The upcoming Sonny Boy anime, which is directed by One Punch Man‘s Shingo Natsume and produced by Madhouse, will premiere on July 15. The anime also revealed its main cast members.

The main cast includes Aoi Ichikawa (Magical Sempai) as Nagara, Saori Ōnishi (Uma Musume: Pretty Derby Season 2) as Nozomi, Aoi Yūki (Rent-a-Girlfriend) as Mizuko, and Chiaki Kobayashi (Moriarty the Patriot) as Asakaze.

Sonny Boy was announced in late April with a trailer. The staff includes Norifumi Kugai (ACCA: 13) as character designer, original designs by Hisashi Euguchi (Perfect Blue), Mari Fujino (Dororo) as art director, Ken Hashimoto (BEASTARS) as color key artist, Akane Fushihara (No Game, No Life Zero) as director of photography, Kashiko Kimura (Btooom!) as editor, and Shōji Hata (Death Note) as sound director. The theme song “Shōnen Shōjo” (“Boys and Girls”) is performed by Ging Nang Boyz band vocalist Kazunobu Mineta.

The anime follows 36 middle school students who are suddenly transported to a different dimension where they receive supernatural powers. The students react to their situation in different ways, with some desperately seeking a way home, some taking on leadership roles, and others running riot without a care due to the joy of having powers beyond human comprehension.

Melvyn originally wanted to write about video games, and he did so for a few years, starting from his college days. He still writes about video games sometimes, but now focuses on anime-related news content and the occasional review. Some of his free time is spent self-learning Japanese, both out of interest in the language and because English-translated light novels and manga are expensive. Every anime season, Melvyn looks forward to discovering new standout episodes and OP/ED animation sequences, as well as learning about the storyboard artists and directors behind them.
