A new mecha anime from Sunrise Beyond and Bandai Spirits has been announced. Titled Kyōkai Senki, the anime is slated to premiere this fall.
The trailer and key visual for the anime were also revealed. Aside from displaying the synopsis and some of the character designs, the trailer offers a look at two of the series’ mechs: the sword-wielding Kenbu and the gun-toting Jōgan.
Kyōkai Senki‘s staff includes Nobuyoshi Habara (Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2202) as director, Noboru Kimura (Kemono Jihen) as series composer, and Kenichi Ōnuki (Golden Kamuy Season 3) as character designer, and Rasmus Faber (Harukana Receive) as music composer. The mechanical designs are done by Yūya Koyanagi (from KEN OKUYAMA DESIGN), Kanetake Ebikawa (Gundam Build Divers Re:Rise), Kenji Teraoka (Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045), and Ippei Kyōbu (Gundam Build Divers Re:Rise), with industrial designer Ken Okuyama as supervisor. Sunrise Beyond is in charge of the animation production.
Set in 2061, Kyōkai Senki introduces a world divided into four economic blocs, with each bloc possessing humanoid mechs called AMAIMs. Additionally, Japan is an oppressed vassal state, and the country has also become the frontlines of a conflict. The story follows 16-year-old mechanical enthusiast Amō Shiiba who, upon meeting an autonomous AI called Gai, decides to reclaim Japan with his self-built AMAIM, Kenbu.
The trailer also previews another character called Gashin Tezuka, a brusque teenager who is part of a resistance and is in pursuit of a mysterious aircraft called Ghost.
