Technology news website The Information reported that AT&T’s WarnerMedia has offered to sell anime streaming platform Crunchyroll to Sony for US$1.5 billion. Based on the report, Sony “balked” at the offer during the sales talk.
Crunchyroll recently announced it has surpassed 3 million subscribers in July 2020. The offer values the streaming service at $500 per subscriber.
In 2017, Sony Pictures Television acquired a majority stake in Funimation at US$143 million.
Since then, Sony Pictures Television and Aniplex have consolidated its anime division into one joint venture: Funimation (US/UK), Wakanim (Europe), and AnimeLab (Australia/New Zealand).
