Third time’s the charm for Sword Art Online as its War of Underworld Arc claims the Anime of the Season title for Fall 2019. It prevailed over its closest rival, Fate/Grand Order: Absolute Demonic Front Babylonia by just five votes the closest AOTS race ever in the history of Anime Trending. Coincidentally, five is also the number of weeks won by both AOTS contenders during the entire season. With the win, SAO becomes the fifth anime produced by A-1 Pictures that won the AOTS title and the second in a year after Kaguya-sama: Love is War won the title in Winter 2019. This further solidifies A-1 Pictures’ lead in terms of the studio with the most AOTS wins.

Aside from winning the AOTS title, SAO also won Favorite Action or Adventure, and the Favorite Ending Theme Song Award for LiSA’s song, “unlasting”. This is the third time that LiSA won the ED award. The first time she won was also with SAO, as her song “Shirushi” was used as the ED of the show’s second season. LiSA last won this award back in Summer 2017 for “Datte Atashi no Hero,” the ED of the show’s second season.

With SAO finally winning the AOTS Title after its third try, the AOTS title has remained elusive for the Fate franchise. F/GO Babylonia is now the third series from the popular multimedia franchise that was an active AOTS contender. F/GO Babylonia’s loss this season marks the sixth time that F/GO has finished as first or second runner-up. The first series that competed, Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works, placed as runner-up in the Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 charts, losing to Your Lie in April and My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU, which also claimed the title of Anime of the Year during the second Anime Trending Awards. Astolfo’s win for Favorite Male Character in Summer 2017 remains as the franchise’s highest AT award. This season, F/GO won the award for Favorite Fantasy or Magical anime, while Ishtar won Favorite Supporting Female, which was likely driven by her popularity from the original game.

Joining Ishtar as one of this season’s character award winners are Souma Yukihira (Food Wars!), who won the Favorite Male Character award for the third time. Fumino Furuhashi (We Never Learn) won the Favorite Female Character despite only winning a single week throughout the whole season. Lutz (Ascendance of a Bookworm) won the Favorite Supporting Male Character Award, giving this anime a total of two wins alongside Favorite Slice-of-Life.

MYTH & ROID’s vocalist KiHOW thanked those who voted for her band’s song, “TIT FOR TAT,” as this season’s Favorite Opening Theme Song (Cautious Hero: The Hero is Overpowered by Overly Cautious). Like LiSA’s win for Favorite Ending Theme Song, this win marks the second theme song award for MYTH & ROID, as they first won back in Summer 2018 with “Voracity” (Overlord S3).

Aside from winning the Favorite OP Theme Song award, Cautious Hero also won Favorite Comedy. Fans claimed this win to be ironic, as its last episode does not fit the “Comedy” category, and the anime should have instead won Favorite Drama. Favorite Drama went to Stars Align, one of the original anime series that aired the whole year.
