Astra Lost in Space defies Vinland Saga’s 4-consecutive weekly winning streak advantage as it wins the Anime of the Season (AOTS) Title in the Summer 2019 Anime Awards. It is the first ever SciFi/Mecha anime to win AOTS in three years, with Kiznaiver being the last anime from the same genre to do so. It is the anime adaptation of the Kenta Shinohara’s manga of the same name, which recently won the 12th Manga Taisho Award on 19 March, 2019. Shinohara is also famously known for SKET Dance,an award-winning manga series that won the 55th Shogakukan Manga Award for Shonen in 2010.

With the win, this makes Astra Lost in Space  the 3rd AOTS Title for Lerche, putting the studio tied with Bones that has the  2nd most number of AOTS win in Anime Trending (AT) history and behind A-1 Pictures with four AOTS Titles. Aside from winning AOTS, Astra Lost in Space is also the leading series among the Summer 2019 Anime for the most number of nominations for the Anime Trending Awards (ATA) 2020 with 11 nominations, including five Aspect Awards nominations out of six.

The unforeseen one-week break due to typhoon for Vinland Saga was  a huge blow for the series as it settles as the runner-up behind Astra Lost in Space. This comes after winning for four consecutive weeks in the Top Anime Charts and makes it the first ever anime to spoil a four consecutive win advantage. Meanwhile, Astra Lost in Space  capitalized on this in the  Last Week Advantage Chart, which gave the series  twice the lead and pushed it to the top in the final tally aside from also winning the 2 weeks before that. Nevertheless for Vinland Saga, it still did well in the awards as the Favorite Drama of the season and has 10 nominations for ATA 2020.

Also having a great showing in the Summer 2019 Awards is Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san who bagged five awards with the highest number of votes for the  Favorite Female Character Award for its titular character. It was a landslide win for Takagi  as she leads by more than a thousand votes against her closest competitor, Kohaku (Dr. Stone). This was a big improvement since  her dismal performance last Winter 2018 where she didn’t even landed on the Top 10.

Takagi did something similar in  Winter 2018 by winning the Favorite Couple-Ship Award again for the 2nd time with Nishikata, who was also nominated for the 2nd time as ‘Man of the Year’ for ATA 2020. The couple equals the record set by Zen Wistalia Clarines and Shirayuki (Snow White with the Red Hair) as the only couples that won the award twice. Though, The latter also won twice for Couple Ship of the Year in ATA 2016 and ATA 2017, while Nishikata and Takagi finished 5th in ATA 2019 Nominees for the same award.  Other awards won by Takagi-san this season are Favorite Comedy, Slice of Life, and of course, Romance.

It will also be vying for the sole Wildcard spot for Anime of the Year after becoming the highest ranking anime of the Last Week Advantage Chart that trailed by more than 5% to the AOTS Title Winner. It will be competing against Mob Psycho 100 and A Certain Scientific Accelerator

Speaking of A Certain Scientific Accelerator, its titular character won this season’s Favorite Male Character after a dominating 6-consecutive winning streak chart performance, equalling Hachiman Hikigaya (My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU) and Yato (Noragami) as the male character with the 2nd longest winning streak and the 4th among all characters. Accelerator’s  win also makes him the 3rd character voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto that won a male character award in Anime Trending – equalling the record just set by Hiroshi Kamiya last season with Levi Ackerman (Attack on Titan).

Perhaps the award that made the biggest buzz in the Summer 2019 Anime Awards is for Favorite Supporting Female Character Award that was won by Shinobu Kochou (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba); the series  itself made quite an impression among this year’s anime releases as well. Kochou added in another nomination for Demon Slayer for ATA 2020, bringing the count to 11 nominations. Meanwhile, People went “SAIDO CHESTO” for Machio Naruzou (How Heavy are the Dumbbells you Lift?) as he won the Favorite Supporting Male Character Award.

For the first time ever since Spring 2014, Vinland Saga  was able to monopolize the Favorite OP and ED theme song of this season  with “Mukanjyo” by Survive Said the Prophet and “Torches” by Aimer respectively.. This maintains Aimer’s perfect record when it comes to seasonal theme song awards. Here “Akane Sasu”, “Brave Shine”, and “ref:rain” had all  won seasonal theme song awards, with the latter two songs winning OP and ED Theme Song of the Year for ATA 2017 and ATA 2019 respectively. The first ever anime to win both seasonal theme awards is Mekakucity Actors

Dr. Stone, and O Maidens in Your Savage Season were the two  particular standouts in the Summer 2019 Anime Awards with  nine nominations each for ATA 2020. Dr. Stone did particularly well in the first three  weeks of the season by topping the charts, but eventually fell  to Vinland Saga in the 4th week and was unable to recover after that. It at least won the Favorite SciFi or Mecha award against the AOTS Astra Lost in Space, but was behind the latter for Favorite Action or Adventure.

O Maidens in Your Savage Season written by Mari Okada, director of ATA 2019 Anime Movie of the Year Maquia: When the Promised Flower Bloom, managed to sneak in as a regular Anime of the Year Nominee after somehow managing to not trail by more than 5% behinds Astra Lost in Space’s lead;that’s despite not topping the charts at least once. This is the first time a series has done this since  Haikyuu!! in  Fall 2015. Finishing at 5th place, O Maidens in Your Savage Season is the highest finish by Lay-duce studio in a final seasonal anime ranking. It had a couple of close calls in the awards like almost winning the Favorite Drama Award, only to fall  behind Vinland Saga.
