Weathering with You has been a hit in Singapore, becoming the All-Time No.1 Animation Film and surpassing the S$1 million mark in less than a month at the Singapore box office as of 1 October 2019. After sneak previews from 7 to 11 September, the movie was released to the general public on 12 September.
The movie also did well in Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia. It was the All-Time No.1 Animation Film in Malaysia and Brunei, achieving a box office of RM 2,838,344 (S$937,934) in less than a month, with 52 screens. Weathering with You brought in a total box office of Rp 10,468,653,500 (S$1,022,621), surpassing Makoto Shinkai’s previous movie, Your Name’s box office by three times. It was shown at 105 screens around Indonesia.
Weathering with You was selected as the Japanese entry for the International Feature Film Awards at the Oscars in 2020. This makes Weathering with You the first animated feature put forward by Japan since Director Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke in the 1990s.
Weathering with You was created by Japanese animator, filmmaker, and manga artist Makoto Shinkai, who directed 5 Centimeters per Second (2007), The Garden of Words (2013) and Your Name (2016). The film features a cast including Kotaro Daigo (Hodaka Morishima), Nana Mori (Hina Amano), Shun Oguri (Keisuke Suga), Tsubasa Honda (Natsumi) and Yūki Kaji (Takai).
Audiences can catch Weathering with You at selected Golden Village cinemas, Cathay Cineplexes, EagleWings Cinematics and The Projector in Singapore. The movie is co-distributed by Encore Films and Golden Village Pictures in Singapore.
