A-1 Pictures has further solidified their record as  the studio with most ‘Anime of the Season’ (AOTS) titles. Kaguya-sama: Love is War wins Winter 2019’s best anime – making it the studio’s 4th AOTS title in Anime Trending (AT) history. Last time the studio won was 3 years ago when ERASED dominated the AT Top Anime Charts, winning 8 out of the 11 charting weeks of Winter 2016. Kaguya-sama’s win also marks the first time since Nisekoi in Winter 2014 that a romantic-comedy anime won both the favorite romance and favorite comedy award in a season.

Aside from winning as this season’s best anime, Kaguya-sama: Love is War won the award for Favorite Female Character with its titular character, Kaguya Shinomiya, who also won the  Favorite Couple-Ship award with her costar/student council president, Miyuki Shirogane. Her assistant Ai Hayasaka, meanwhile, finished as second place and ceded to the returning Kurumi Tokisaki (Date A Live III) for the Favorite Supporting Female Character Award, unable to defeat the latter’s unwavering popularity of 6 years. Phil (The Promised Neverland) claims the highest award won by The Promised Neverland as he wins this season’s Favorite Supporting Male Character award, which makes him the youngest character award winner in AT History.

The Promised Neverland finished as the runner-up for AOTS, making it the second consecutive time that CloverWorks has finished in this manner.. The series won the awards for Favorite Drama and Favorite Mystery or Psychological in the side categories. Its Ending Theme Song “Zettai Zetsumei” performed by Co Shu Nie, wins the award for Favorite Ending Theme Song while  Domestic Girlfriend’s “Kawaki wo Ameku” by Minami wins the Favorite Opening Theme Song Award.

The other members of the Shuchi’in Academy Student Council, Chika Fujiwara and Yuu Ishigami, all have managed to qualify for the ‘Girl of the Year’ and ‘Man of the Year’ titles for the 6th Anime Trending Awards (ATA). Fujiwara actually finished as a runner-up to her Vice President, trailing by 994 votes, while Ishigami placed third in the final male character rankings, which was lead by Hyakkimaru (Dororo), whose anime finished at 4th place for AOTS while also winning the award for Favorite Supernatural.

Though it did not manage to win the Favorite Couple-Ship award, The Quintessential Quintuplets managed to still make an impression as Fuutarou Uesugi appeared in half of the Final Top 10 Couple Ship spots, with him being shipped to each Nakano Quintuplet. It makes Uesugi the character with the most number of ships in a Top 10 Couple Ship Chart – beating the record of 3 ships set by Hachiman Hikigaya (My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU) back in Spring 2015.  Miku Nakano led the other Nakano sisters and finished as the runner-up for the award, followed by Nino in 3rd place. The two sisters with Fuutarou qualify  for the Couple-Ship of the Year Award. The other three sisters, Yotsuba, Itsuki, and Ichika, finished at 5th, 6th, and 7th respectively.

One ship will notably not make it as a nominee for Couple-Ship of the Year. Naofumi Iwatani and Raphtalia, at the last minute – was booted out of the race for the said title as the Fuutarou-Nino ship won in the last week of the couple-ship charts. It’s only one of the things that The Rising of the Shield Hero surprisingly was not able to do. Raphtalia herself failed to qualify as Girl of the Year as she only finished at 6th, while Iwatani barely made it to the Top 5 Male nominees – finishing in 5th place. The series itself only managed to finish in 3rd place for AOTS despite winning 3 consecutive times in the weekly anime chart and the Last Week Advantage Polls. It has  won the award for Favorite Action or Adventure and Favorite Fantasy or Magical

However, Raphtalia still has a chance of qualifying via the Joint Character Wildcards held in December, but it will be an uphill struggle since she will be competing in a field of 80-150 characters composed of both male and female characters from all other seasons that were able to finish between 6th and 15th place in their respective season, plus the characters from anime films that did not have a prior TV anime series. She will need to either win the wildcard or at least do not trail by more than 3% to the eventual wildcard winner.
