Zombie Land Saga records surprising win in Fall 2018 Anime Awards

In a surprising turn of events, Zombie Land Saga wins as the ‘Anime of the Season’ (AOTS) for the Fall 2018 Anime Season, beating Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai by 107 votes. It becomes the first idol anime to win the top seasonal anime title and is also MAPPA’s first anime to win so. The anime also won the award for Favorite Supernatural, Favorite Original Anime and to for what it did best, Favorite Comedy.

The show’s mad producer, Koutarou Tatsumi meanwhile overwhelmingly wins the Favorite Male Character Awards, making him just the second adult to win a character award, while 3 of his Zombie Idols made it to the Final Top 10 Female Characters, with Tae Yamada taking the lead at 4th place, followed by Sakura Minamoto and Saki Nikaidou at 7th and 10th respectively.  The Favorite Female Character Award eventually was given to Juliet Persia (Boarding School Juliet who beats Mai Sakurajima (Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai) in a close race with the former leading by just 87 votes – another upset for the series. Sakurajima would at least win the Favorite Couple Ship award with her junior Sakuta Azusagawa.  Her other junior, Rio Futaba would also win an award for the series as Futaba claims the award for Favorite Supporting Female Character. Futaba is followed closely at second by Azusagawa’s younger sister, Kaede, trailing by only 239 votes.

For the counterpart award, Gobuta (That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime), to everyone’s delight, hilariously won as this season’s Favorite Supporting Male Character with some jokingly asking where’s Goblin Slayer and pointing out the fact that the former had a much better standing than the former. Goblin Slayer himself only ended at 8th place in the list of this season’s favorite male character while his anime only finished at 9th for the AOTS Title, slipping at the latter half of the season after having a strong performance in the first three weeks. Yuu Koito and Touko Nanami (Bloom into You) failed to capitalize on Ash Lynx and Eiji Okumura’s historical win as the first ever non-straight ship to win the Favorite Couple-Ship award in the previous season. Koito and Nanami settled for 2nd for the awards, but their anime would at least win as this season’s Favorite Drama. There was a heated exchange that erupted during announcement of the Favorite Romance Anime between fans of Bloom into You and Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai, which have been going at it ever since the polls were still ongoing. Bloom into You finished at 3rd Place for the AOTS Title

Going back with Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai, the series also won as this season’s Favorite Opening Theme Song Award with “Kimi no Sei” by The Peggies, as everyone went on with the ‘UwU’ craze.  SSSS.Gridman’s “youthful beautiful” which was performed by Maaya Uchida wins as this season’s Favorite Theme Song, continuing the winning streak of voice actresses wining the theme song awards for the third time. The series itself won as this season’s Favorite SciFi or Mecha Anime and also finished at 7th place for this season’s overall top anime.

Finally, in the 3 seasons that it was part of Anime Trending’s charts and polls, JoJo fans were able to win a seasonal award as JoJo’s Bizzare Adventure: Golden Wind was crowned as this season’s Favorite Action or Adventure Anime. Unlike last time however, JoJo fails to qualify again for ‘Anime of the Year’ as he loses the spot for the Wildcard Rounds to IRODUKU: The World in Colors because of the ranking it got during the Last Week Advantage Polls for Fall 2018.
