Sword Art Online Alternative: GGO Tops 1st Spring 2018 Anime Chart

The first Anime Trending Anime of the Week chart for Spring 2018 was released this past Sunday. Placing 5th in the Top Anticipated AnimeSword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online took number one in the first weekly anime charts of the season. 

Originally written by Keiichi Sigsawa, the author of Kino’s Journey, the spin-off anime series follows Kohiruimaki Karen (LLENN) who enjoys playing the virtual reality game Gun Gale Online where she obtained a short cute girl avatar to escape her tall complex in the real world. Fans abroad have high hopes for the new spin-off series takes a different approach on the popular franchise.

During Crunchyroll Expo 2017, Anime Trending interviewed Keiichi Sigsawa before the spin-off anime series was announced. Sigsawa commented that he was approached during the production of Sword Art Online II to confirm the validity of the guns in the series. As evident in the past three episodes, the spin-off series focuses heavily on the technical aspects behind battle royale gameplay while satisfying gun enthusiasts with real life guns such as the P-90.

In the world of guns and steel that is Gun Gale Online, LLENN has been a devoted, female solo player. She is obsessed with two things: donning herself entirely in pink and honing her skills with consistent game play. She soon discovers her love for hunting other players (a.k.a. PK), soon to be known as the “Pink Devil.”

Meanwhile, LLENN meets a beautiful yet mysterious player, Pitohui, and the two click right away. Doing as she is told by Pitohui, she enters the Squad Jam group battle.

Overall, the Top 10 Anime of the Week is heavily stacked with highly anticipated anime across the board leaving anime such as Megalobox and Golden Kamuy just shy of the Top 10. Surprisingly, Food Wars! The Third Plate only placed in 8th as the first cour dominated the Fall 2017 anime charts hinting a stiff and competitive season. 

Fans can now vote in this week’s Anime of the Week poll for the second weekly anime chart. Results will be released on April 29.
